AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — Chrysler got tons of traction with its 2011 Super Bowl commercial featuring Eminem. But it takes a different approach to selling the 2012 Chrysler 300, relying instead on a dead Detroit poet and the 1917 "See It Through" poem.
The new Chrysler 300 commercial airs nationally on Thanksgiving Day during the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers football game on Fox.
The "See It Through" campaign borrows the name of the poem and capitalizes on the theme of hard times and comebacks. The poem was written by the prolific Edgar A. Guest, a former Detroit Free Press columnist who died in 1959 and wrote more than 11,000 poems. He was known for "a facility for folksy verse, sentimental and moralistic," according to the Reader's Encyclopedia of American Literature. His most famous line is: "It takes a heap o'livin' in a house t' make it home."
"This new ad is a humble thanksgiving nod to everyone who has believed in Chrysler's resurgence," said Saad Chehab, Chrysler Brand president and CEO in a statement on Monday.

Chrysler-Lancia CEO Saad Chebab told Autocar that there will be no Touring version of the redesigned Chrysler 300 built for Europe, saying that wagon sales in the U.S. are not robust enough to justify development costs for a five-door version of the platform. If Europe isn't getting a Chrysler wagon, we certainly aren't going to see a Dodge version here.
The previous-generation Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 both spawned wagon variants, the Dodge Magnum for the U.S. market and the Chrysler 300 Touring overseas. The Magnum was never a hot seller, though it had its fans – ourselves included – and Autocar says the 300 wagon was popular both in the U.K. and on mainland Europe.

Chrysler launched the second-generation 300 for 2011, and its basic recipe remains the same as when the 300 first debuted in 2004: a luxurious, all-American rear-wheel-drive sedan with a choice of thrifty V-6 and brawny V-8 engines. The new base engine is Chrysler’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, offering 292 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission.
Our tester was a Chrysler 300 Limited V-6, which stickered for $31,195 before options, which included the $2795 SafetyTec package consisting of power folding mirrors, adaptive HID headlights, parking sensors, collision- and blind-spot warning systems, and adaptive cruise control; a $1295 panoramic sunroof; and the $795 UConnect touch-screen navigation and entertainment interface. Our 300 also had the $3250 Luxury group with niceties like leather seats, LED interior lighting, a power sunshade, heated and cooled front seats, and heated and cooled cup holders. Looking for evidence that Chrysler is hard at work on a hot-rod version of the flagship 300C? Here’s the smoking gun.
Spy shooters have captured the 300C SRT8 with no camouflage, and details are overwhelming that this is the halo four-door for Chrysler. The test car even has SRT8 badges on the steering wheel and the tachometer.
There also are wheels that look like six-spoke SRT rollers, Brembo brakes and chrome dual exhaust.
Look for the 6.4-liter Hemi V8 in the Charger SRT8 to be used in the 300 sibling. The Dodge is rated at 465 hp and 465 lb-ft, so look for similar output in the Chrysler. Other carryover features likely will include the elaborate 8.4-inch touch screen in the middle and paddle shifters. Also note the heavily bolstered seats and the leather-wrapped steering wheel. A five-speed automatic will complete the powertrain.
The outside is marked by an angrier front fascia, cadillac grille and athletic rocker panels. The elegant taillight and headlight styles from the regular car are also present.
Chrysler hasn’t announced its New York auto show plans, but we’d be surprised if this hot rod from the Pentastar doesn’t have a spotlight role. And when Dodge boss Ralph Gilles introduced the Charger SRT8 in Chicago, he punctuated the event by planting a kiss on the front fender.

Scheduled to debut a full month away at the Detroit Auto Show, the folks at Chrysler were obviously too proud of their redesigned flagship sedan to wait. We’ve already been teased with several close-ups of the redesigned Chrysler 300, but now we have the full vehicle to show you. Looking more polished, but just as luxurious as when it first popped onto the scene half a decade ago, the 300 also gets a significant interior redesign much like the 2011 Dodge Charger with an optional 8.4-inch infotainment screen. Other optional goodies include heated and coolest seats, a dual-pane sunroof, and even a nice set of 20-inch wheels. Chrysler also promises improved luxury through significantly decreased sound deadening.

As for power, like the Charger, the 300 gets the new Pantastar V6 as standard with 292-hp and 260 ft-lbs of torque. A Hemi V8 is optional with 5.7-liters of displacement and Chrysler’s new Fuel Saver Technology that shuts down cylinders when not in need to conserve fuel. Output is rated at 360-hp and 390 ft-lbs of torque.

Chrysler LLC will cut 1,825 jobs by eliminating one shift at a Toledo Jeep plant and accelerating the closure of its sport utility vehicle factory in Newark, Del., because of the slowing global economy and a shift toward smaller vehicles.

About 825 workers at the Toledo North Assembly Plant will be laid off indefinitely as of Dec. 31. The Newark closure also will be effective at the end of the year and affect about 1,000 jobs, the company said Thursday in a news release.

The cuts are about 6 percent of Chrysler's U.S. hourly work force of 33,000.

The Toledo factory makes the Dodge Nitro and Jeep Liberty. Both have been selling slowly this year due to high gas prices and a slowing U.S. economy.

The Newark plant makes the slow-selling Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen sport utility vehicles. It originally was expected to close at the end of 2009.

Auburn Hills, Mich.-based Chrysler said in a statement that the changes will adjust inventory to better match consumer demand. Chrysler considers merger options

DETROIT, Michigan (AFP) - US automaker Chrysler considered several new partnership options Sunday, including mergers with Renault-Nissan and General Motors, industry and union officials said.
Two sources, one an executive at a rival company and another a key official from the United Auto Workers, said talk of merger of Chrysler with Renault-Nissan had been alive for a week.

"I think that might make some sense. You would combine Asia, Europe and the US in one company," noted the union official who asked not to be identified.

"I don't see what the advantage would be in combining Chrysler and GM since they're both so heavy into trucks," the official added.

Meanwhile, officials from both Chrysler and GM confirmed the two companies had been holding talks.

"As we have said, the company is looking at a number of potential global partnerships as it explores growth opportunities around the world," said Chrysler spokeswoman Lori McTavish.

She noted that Chrysler entered into a partnership with Nissan earlier this year to build trucks for the Japanese automaker.

Last month, it began building minivans for Volkswagen North America. VW is already marketing the Chrysler-built minivans in North America.

"Beyond those partnerships already announced, however, Chrysler has not formed any new agreements and has no further announcements to make at this time," McTavish said.

Tony Cervone, GM vice president of communications for North America, said GM was not going to comment on any discussion with Chrysler.

"Without referencing this specific rumor, as we've often said, GM officials routinely discuss issues of mutual interest with other automakers," said Cervone.

The sheer cost of developing new, more fuel-efficient vehicles is driving companies together, observed another executive, who noted that GM has already collaborated with Ford on building new transmissions and has worked with Chrysler and BMW in developing hybrid vehicles, noted one GM executive.

The gloomy outlook for the US auto industry was already a key driver behind talks before they were sidelined by the upheaval in the world's credit markets.

Jim Press, Chrysler vice chairman, said recently he did not think car sales would begin to recover for another "year or year and a half."

"Falling trade-in equity, fewer leasing options, credit market restructuring and the increased migration to used vehicles are all putting added pressure on the US new-vehicle sales market in 2009," according to a new report from J.D. Power & Associates, which now expects unit sales to drop to 13.2 million in the United States in 2009.

The value of GM's stock dropped 45 percent last week as investors such as Citibank reduced their holdings of the troubled automaker. Citibank cut its holdings to three percent from five percent on fears that GM would face a continuing drain on its resources as auto sales plunged.

A Chrysler official put the chances of a deal with GM at about "50-50." But a key UAW official said neither company had approached the UAW.

In June, Chrysler officials said the company would try to eliminate 1,000 salaried jobs through retirements and buyouts.

However, the company also warned that it might be forced to use "involuntary separations" if not enough salaried employees volunteered to leave.

Chrysler has eliminated 22,000 jobs since February 2007 and now has approximately 66,000 employees, including more than 8,000 in Auburn Hills, Michigan. It is planning to eliminate another 4,000 jobs during 2009.

Chrysler, as a private company, does not release quarterly financial information but GM lost 15.5 billion dollars (11.5 billion euros) in the second quarter and is expected to post additional losses when it posts its third quarter results at the end of October.

So I was scanning thru the archives here and came across someone who had bought an HID conversion kit off of ebay for around $100. Now normally I am a little skeptic at some things on ebay. I have bought things before on there but only things under 50 bucks. Well earlier this week one of my fog lights blew out and it was a Nokya cosmic white bulb that was like 30 bucks from some internet site and I really like the look of it. So now I have to buy a new set of bulbs for the 30 bucks again plus shipping and of coarse somewhere down the line one of my Nokya headlights will go out I'm sure cause I don't have the factory HID on my C unfortunately. Well I gave in and order 2 sets of HID plug and play setups for my C. I chose 10000k brilliant blue and am hoping that come this time next week my lights on my car will look very good. AN ELECTRIC car is hitting the roads in Poole as part of a drive to cut carbon emissions.

The Borough of Poole is road-testing a Mercedes Smart Electric Drive car for a week, with the building consultancy service team using it to travel to business appointments.

It is part of the council's drive to cut its carbon dioxide emissions by 25% by 2012.

The electric car does not produce vehicle exhaust emissions such as carbon dioxide, recharges direct from a standard three-pin mains socket, has 30kw output, a top speed of 60mph and a range of up to 70 miles, or eight hours when fully charged.

Councillor Don Collier said: "We are delighted to be road-testing an electric Smart car and are proud to be part of the drive for new cleaner and greener technologies in cars.

"We are keen to lead by example and encourage businesses and residents to think about their carbon footprint and their impact on the environment while carrying out their day-to-day activities.

"The introduction of electric vehicles is just one of many initiatives we are developing to reduce Poole's carbon footprint."

Borough of Poole will consider permanent use of the vehicle if the trial proves successful. The council's grounds maintenance contractors Continental Landscapes Ltd is also using three electric vans. Car grills, billet grills.

Can Chevrolet Volt launch a green revolution?

The Chevrolet Volt, which made its world debut at the Detroit auto show in January 2007, may prove to be the most significant concept car to be introduced this century – so far, at least.

Unlike most concept cars, it's not the Volt's styling that defines it – in fact, its styling is quite derivative. It is the car's engineering that sets it apart.

The Volt employs an electric-drive architecture that General Motors calls E-Flex. In the words of GM vice-chair Bob Lutz, it promises to be a "game changer," and in this case that claim may be more than just hyperbole.

The other thing making the Volt significant is the fact that its technology was destined from the beginning for production – in the near term, not 20 years out. Within months of the concept's debut, GM announced that a production version would be built, with a target introduction date of calendar year 2010.

In purist technical terms, the Volt is a hybrid, employing both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. GM prefers not to call it such, however, for it is unlike any other hybrid currently available.

Without getting too bogged down in technical exotica, it is a series hybrid, while those currently on the market are parallel or series-parallel hybrids.

Unlike the latter, Volt has no mechanical connection between its gas engine and its wheels. It uses a gasoline or diesel engine solely to drive a generator, which in turn provides power to an electric drive motor (or motors) or to recharge a battery pack.

The Volt and its derivatives can also be plugged into a common household electric outlet to recharge the on-board batteries, which will take about 6.5 hours.

According to GM, the vehicle can then be driven up to 64 km on electric power alone before needing recharging, either through the use of its gas engine (which is considerably smaller and more fuel-efficient than would be used in a non-hybrid vehicle) or by being plugged in again.

That may not seem like much distance, but more than 70 per cent of American drivers travel less than 64 km round-trip in their daily commutes, GM says. (Comparable Canadian figures are not available.) For those drivers, if they recharged the Volt each night at their homes, "they would never have to buy a drop of gasoline," Lutz says.

It is because of that pure electric drive capability that GM prefers to call the Volt an electric vehicle with a range extender (the gas engine) rather than a hybrid.

What sets the Volt apart from other attempts at practical electric vehicles is that, if the driver needs to drive further than the range the batteries can provide, he or she won't be stranded. In fact, with the gas engine powering the car's on-board generator, the range can be extended to several hundred kilometres on a single tank of fuel.

If the daily commute is 100 km rather than 64 km or less, Lutz says, the fuel consumption of the Volt would be in the range of 1.6 L/100 km – just over one-third that of a typical current hybrid. For those who still think the old way, that is 180 miles per Imperial gallon.

During periods of constant engine operation, to sustain battery charge, fuel consumption is estimated to be 4.7 L/100 km.

While the E-Flex concept sounds simple in principle, there remains one big hurdle to be overcome. Lithium-ion batteries are seen as a necessity for commercialization of plug-in electric vehicles of any type.

They offer increased power and energy density (capacity per unit of size and weight) compared to the nickel-metal-hydride batteries currently used in most hybrids.

Lithium-ion technology is already widely used in cellphones, laptop computers and power tools, but there are significant challenges in scaling up the technology for use in automotive applications, where they must be connected in series to provide an output of up to 350 volts.

Chief among those challenges is thermal management – a problem that has resulted recently in fires and corresponding recalls in some laptop and cellphone applications.

While semi-hand-built lithium-ion battery packs have been successfully adapted to low-volume automotive production, such as in the Tesla roadster, the technology is not yet at the stage of commercial feasibility for mass production, given all the technical and liability constraints applicable to the automotive environment.

That was the big challenge GM had to overcome if its goal of 2010 is to be realized. There was some risk involved in the venture when the Volt was revealed, Lutz conceded, but he estimated the potential for failure to be just 10 per cent.

"We wouldn't undertake a project like this if we weren't pretty confident we could succeed," he said.

While it was a tall order, that confidence appears to be well placed. Real-world testing of pre-production test mules is well underway and GM is said to be on the verge of announcing a production contract with one of two battery suppliers: Compact Power Inc., a subsidiary of Korea's LG Chem Ltd., and German-based Continental Automotive Systems, in conjunction with A123 Systems Inc. of Watertown, Mass.

GM has been proceeding with production engineering and development of the Volt and the broader E-Flex architecture in parallel with its battery development initiatives so one won't hold up the other. A plant in Michigan has been allocated for Volt production, and in a recent interview Larry Burns, GM's vice-president in charge of research and development, said a late-2010 target for Volt production still looks feasible.

Beyond just the promise of the Volt, the E-Flex architecture is capable of adapting to multiple electrical power sources, ultimately including fuel cells, with common electric-drive systems.

It won't happen overnight, it will probably take several forms, and it is unlikely to totally replace the fossil-fuelled internal combustion engine for decades to come. But the future of the automobile appears almost certainly to be electric – one way or another.

Chrysler LLC said Friday it is preparing to reveal some of its future plans to its dealers next week, and one dealer said they'll get a look at the next-generation electric vehicles the automaker is developing.

Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep dealers across the country will get "insight into our business strategies" Tuesday via videoconference at about 100 movie theaters across the nation, Chrysler spokesman Stuart Schorr said.

Although Schorr declined to reveal the contents of the presentation, Alan Helfman, vice president of River Oaks Chrysler Jeep in Houston, said Chrysler told him the event will show off the plug-in electric cars that the automaker has been working on.

"This new generation of cars, from what I've been hearing, are the next generation of electric cars," Helfman said. "They should be great sellers."

Schorr said Chrysler CEO Robert Nardelli, Vice Chairman Jim Press, Vice Chairman Tom LaSorda and Steven Landry, executive vice president of North American sales, would participate in Tuesday's program and answer dealer questions.

A similar presentation is planned for dealers in Canada, Mexico and international locations, he said.

Helfman said he wasn't familiar with the specific features of the vehicles that will be presented but they would be powered by a plug-in electric powertrain.

The effect is certainly imperial, with distinctive creases front and rear. From certain angles there is more than a little of the Rolls-Royce Phantom about the concept, which I suppose Chrysler won't be too unhappy to read.

Performance figures are supplied for the concept car, though 5.5 seconds to 60mph seems massively optimistic given the proportions of the car and its luxurious four-seat interior, 340bhp 5.7-litre Hemi V8 aside. The concept car's interior is deliciously detailed, with exuberant use of supple leather, suede and California burl wood in brown tones. Entrance is suitably grand with the omission of a B-pillar and a 'suicide' rear door. Don't be too surprised if Chrysler actually produce the Imperial; the company has a habit of turning cool concepts into production models.

What is really surprising though is how close the two cars are on performance, despite the older car having significantly less power than its young relative. You might think the new car would walk away from the old model, but the MkI exhibits that not all the three decades between them have resulted in progress.

How are they similar?

Both are coupés, have three doors, low slung driving positions - not quite low enough in the new car - and are at the top of their respective ranges. Although looking proportionally similar, the new car is bigger in every dimension, though interior space feels just as accommodating in the MkI despite it actually being a touch smaller externally and in wheelbase. Unsurprisingly they share styling cues, the new Scirocco's enclosed headlamps featuring four lights in a stylistic nod to its older relative. Inside, both demonstrate Volkswagen's solid build quality and a neat, uncluttered approach to the driving environment.

With distinctively shaped hatchbacks, both have decent sized boots - access to the MkI's load space being far easier - meaning they're both practical choices. The dash was nicely padded, and the door panels - although harder than the dash - felt OK to the touch. The steering wheel had a section of fake wood at the top, which was actually decent (I've driven several Lexus automobiles with "wood" steering wheels, and they felt no more or less like real wood than this one did). However, the steering wheel was larger than I would have preferred. I prefer a smaller diameter wheel with a thick rim; the 300C's was large diameter with a thin rim. Perhaps the wheel was just another throwback to a bygone era, as rear wheel drive (as most 300Cs are) V8-powered American cars are.

The interior of my light blue metallic test vehicle was trimmed in two-tone grey, with darker grey on the upper half of the dash and door panels, steering wheel, and console lid. The lower half of the dash and door panels and the seats were trimmed in the lighter grey. Overall, the look worked pretty well. Speaking of the seats, they were reasonably comfortable for several trips over one hour, but didn't offer much lateral support. The back seat wasn't as large as I would have expected; as you can see in the photo gallery linked at the end of this review, a rear facing convertible child seat is a tight fit, even when the seat in front of it is fairly far forward. Also, I couldn't get ether of the rear seat safety belts to lock by pulling them all the way out, although the owner's manual said doing that should do the trick.Sizable portions of the seats also appeared to be made of vinyl rather than leather. I found the rectangular shape of the center stack to be in line with the interior styling theme of most Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles I've seen, but at least it more or less works with the squared-off, broad shouldered exterior shape. Also, its silvery fake metallic finish was smooth, which I preferred to the flat silver metallic in the Lincoln MKZ AWD that I reviewed a few weeks ago.

The 300C that I spent time with included a navigation system, which was relatively easy to use in spite of not taking time to read the owner's manual. It also featured both Sirius satellite radio (with Boston Acoustics speakers and a subwoofer) and Sirius Backseat TV. The backseat TV is a impressive idea technologically (the LCD display is hidden inside the center console lid), but only offers three channels, all of which are child-oriented: Nickelodeon, Disney, and the Cartoon Network. So, while I loved the idea of Sirius Backseat TV, every time I turned it on to see what was playing, it happened to not be one of the shows that we find appropriate for our two year old. Just bringing along a DVD or three of his favorite shows would have worked better, had we been inclined to allow him to watch videos in the car. (Our rule of thumb is that it has to be a two hour car ride before the screen is flipped open). This 300C was also equipped with Chrysler's MyGIG hard disc system for storing media files. I didn't have an opportunity to test MyGIG with a USB thumb drive or an audio CD (I will this week in the Chrysler Town & Country Limited I'm testing), but I can report that it unfortunately does not include an iPod interface like Ford's SYNC system does. I plugged my iPod (3G video) into the USB port on the radio faceplate, and it knew that a USB device was connected, but could not find any music (there are over 2,500 songs on it) or photos (there are over 3,000 photos on it), but at least it could charge the iPod. There is a plain aux in jack below the USB connector on the front of the faceplate to connect an iPod, but forget about controlling it on the navigation screen or the steering wheel's controls as you can in Ford products or any others with true iPod connectivity.
